Clemson’s Board of Trustees isn’t wasting any time. Less than three days after president-elect Dr. Kevin Guskiewicz backed out, the board has called an emergency meeting for Thursday morning to steady the ship and get the university’s leadership back on track.
The agenda is clear for Thursday: picking Clemson’s next president and locking in the terms. The Compensation Committee will hammer out the contract details and financials for whoever gets the nod.
Trustees moved fast, jumping into action to fill the gap left by Guskiewicz’s sudden change of heart. He was unanimously picked as Clemson’s 16th president on May 27 after a six-month national search, but on Monday, he decided to stay at Michigan State instead.
The Timeline of the Reversal
The drama kicked off Monday, July 6, when Guskiewicz went public on Michigan State’s channels, saying personal and professional reasons led him to change his mind.
“The Clemson University Board of Trustees was notified today that Kevin Guskiewicz has chosen to remain at Michigan State University for personal reasons,” Clemson University representatives said in a statement released Monday afternoon. “The national search had a robust pool of candidates, and the Board will be meeting soon to determine next steps.”
Reports later showed Guskiewicz’s about-face came after some tough talks with Michigan State’s board over structure and money. He first looked at Clemson because of friction in East Lansing, including transparency issues and a new loyalty pledge that tried to keep trustees from speaking out.
But after a big push from Michigan State insiders, including basketball coach Tom Izzo, the board sweetened Guskiewicz’s deal and promised to fix the governance headaches. Guskiewicz took the new contract and decided to stay put in East Lansing.
“During the past several weeks, under the strong leadership of Board Chair Brianna Scott and Vice Chair Renee Knake Jefferson, we have had productive conversations about the governance challenges I previously shared,” Guskiewicz noted in his official statement to the Michigan State community. “The board has demonstrated a commitment to implementing a more robust governance structure, including recent improvements to the Code of Ethics and Conduct.”
Clemson’s Urgency
Guskiewicz’s sudden exit put Clemson’s leaders in a whirlwind, speeding up the backup search plan. The university has been in transition since December 9, 2025, when longtime President Jim Clements announced he was stepping down.
With classes starting August 17, the board is under the gun to lock in a new president. Instead of launching another long search, they’re sticking with the candidates from the last six-month hunt, making it possible to move quickly for Thursday’s decision.
Guskiewicz got the nod thanks to his deep experience running big universities. Before Michigan State, he was chancellor at UNC Chapel Hill from 2019 to 2024, and he’s held roles as dean, department chair, and Kenan Distinguished Professor. He’s also led research centers focused on retired athletes and sport-related brain injuries.
Thursday’s vote should finally end the leadership uncertainty and give Clemson a new president before students return to campus in August.
