On Tuesday, Christopher Vizzina was named the next starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers. While Dabo Swinney held this close to the vest for as long as he could, he decided to go with the more mature quarterback over the promising true freshman Tait Reynolds. Whether or not you agree with this decision, Vizzina showed plenty of poise at the podium when talking about his big moment.
"It's obviously not gone how I planned it to go, and rarely do things happen the way we think they're going to go. It's all in the Lord's plan, and I've been trusting that," Vizzina said. "So you're just thinking about being a freshman coming in here and having the tools, but not really mentally ready, and then just growing every single year. Then yesterday, to sit down and hear that, it's just a surreal moment. I was excited to tell my parents and everybody; a very memorable moment yesterday."
Even though Swinney was always leaning toward starting Vizzina over Reynolds, the composure with which Vizzina shared being named the starter shows it was his turn for this big opportunity. Clemson has to open at No. 11 LSU on Saturday. Tiger Stadium eats visiting opponents alive. Vizzina may have enough arm talent to hold his own, but what he possesses above the shoulders can't be discounted.

Christopher Vizzina's leadership shines through every time he speaks
Coming into his fourth year with the program, Vizzina has only completed 64-of-105 passes for 596 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. The bulk of his production came in last year's home loss to the SMU Mustangs. Even in defeat, Vizzina showed signs of promise as Cade Klubnik's heir apparent under center with 317 yards and three touchdowns on 29-of-42 passing for the Tigers.
Any talk of possible production aside, Vizzina won this job because he will handle this transitional period for Clemson at quarterback with pure grace. In time, he may eventually give way to Reynolds. Swinney and offensive coordinator Chad Morris expect both of them to play some on Saturday night. However, Vizzina earned the right to lead Clemson out of the tunnel because of his maturity.
Vizzina will be tasked with going up against a possible first-round pick in Sam Leavitt for LSU. Even if Leavitt and head coach Lane Kiffin are brand new to Baton Rouge, this will be Year 3 for Blake Baker calling this LSU defense. With a boatload of transfer portal additions, his side of the football may no longer leak like a sieve. Vizzina may be up against it, but he does seem to possess leadership traits.
In the end, every time we have heard Vizzina speak to the Clemson media at the podium, there is a certain cool, collected, and calm confidence about him. Despite playing for a team that has been in varying stages of tumult over the last few seasons, that does not seem to faze him. It is why Clemson may actually have a puncher's chance at the upset bid versus LSU on a Baton Rouge Saturday night.
The last few weeks have not been easy for Vizzina, but he should be proud to represent his university.
