Despite de-committing from Clemson back in April, there was a chance four-star safety prospect Seth Williams was going to link up with the Tigers once again. Dabo Swinney and his staff continued to recruit him in the months to follow his de-commitment. They were not going to give up the fight, even if the in-state Georgia Bulldogs started to become a bigger part of the recruiting picture for him.
Right before picking to Georgia, Williams shared a few glowing remarks about the Clemson program.
“Clemson, they were just really competitive in the recruiting process, and them being that school for me growing up, it was just always a dream to get that offer,” Williams said. “They kept on recruiting me after I de-committed. Just the family aspect, too. I have a former teammate at [Clemson University], and it was just different there. The love was different. What more can I say? Coach (Nolan) Turner is a great coach, coach (Dabo) Swinney is a great coach. It’s just different at Clemson.”

This was clearly not an easy decision for Williams to make, but here is why he said he picked Georgia.
“Really just being able to be close to home with my family, and you know it’s just different when you can stay home and really do what you need to do,” Williams said. “My family was here, my mom and my dad are here and they sacrificed a lot for me. Really just staying home and being able to put on for the city and put on for the state.”
Yes, Georgia may be in-state for the Atlanta native. However, Clemson is just on the other side of the border in South Carolina. There have been so many Metro Atlanta prospects who have committed to Clemson over the years. To be honest, it may have more to do with him being able to play for a strong defensive-minded head coach in Kirby Smart than anything. Swinney specializes coaching receivers.
This is just the latest example of the dangers of Clemson and Georgia's recruiting soil overlapping.
4-star S Seth Williams chose Georgia over Clemson to be closer to home
According to the 247Sports Composite, Williams is the No. 45 player from Georgia, the No. 37 safety in his class, and the No. 409 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting cycle. He had 52 official offers, but only Georgia and Clemson were his finalists. He initially was going to announce his commitment over Fourth of July Weekend, but ended up waiting until the last day of the month before doing so.
While it is so frustrating for Clemson to be played for a fool in all this, it just comes with the territory in trying to recruit against a national powerhouse in Georgia in the Dawgs' backyard of Atlanta. What is important to understand here is for as good as a Clemson offer is, Swinney was never going to be the hands-on teacher for him as a defensive back as Smart would most certainly be for him up in Athens.
Regardless, the news of Williams picking Georgia over Clemson should not lessen the impact of getting four-star quarterback Trace Hawkins to commit to the Tigers on Thursday. He is now the foundational piece of Clemson's 2028 class. With Williams being a rising senior, it made sense for him to pick his school of choice right before fall semester of high school commences inside of Atlanta.
Ultimately, this is not what Clemson fans wanted to happen at all, and it is a shame they got burned.
