As The Portal Turns
Things don’t stop during transfer portal season. Here’s the latest updates from Clemson Football and relevant other programs/players.
Clemson cornerback Toriano Pride will enter the portal.
If you had told me at the beginning of the season that Pride would transfer at season’s end, I wouldn’t have believed you. Having seen the success of young corners like Avieon Terrell and Shelton Lewis, who have passed Pride on the depth chart, I am not surprised that Pride is leaving.
Former Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei announced that he will re-enter the portal after one season at Oregon State.
I still like DJ and wish him the best, but the fact that the guy who had a three year plan to go to the NFL is getting ready to play a fifth year of college football tells you all you need to know.
That said, I can’t blame him for transferring again. The Beavers’ head coach just left for Michigan State. The program is in limbo as one of the two schools from the PAC-12 that haven’t been scooped up by another Power conference for 2024.
DJ might not be NFL caliber, but he will have several suitors among contenders for a spot on their roster next season, and I imagine the NIL payout will be handsome.
South Carolina’s Juice Wells has entered the transfer portal and will leave the Gamecocks.
This is an unusual situation, but in hindsight the comments from last week by Wells and Shane Beamer make more sense now.
NC State quarterback MJ Morris has entered the portal
This one does not surprise me. No one stops playing when they are starting just so they can preserve a year of eligibility…unless they plan to transfer. This situation felt very D’Eriq King to me.
