November 18, 2000: South Carolina 14, Clemson 16 – The Catch II

This edition of the game was not for those who like offensive battles. Late in the game, the Gamecocks held a one-point lead at 14-13.

Fortunately for Clemson, they had one of the best quarterbacks to ever lead the offense taking snaps that day.

Woody Dantzler might not be held in the same regard by modern fans as Trevor Lawrence, Deshaun Watson, or Tajh Boyd, but those who saw him remember him as one of the most dynamic football players to ever wear the orange, regardless of position.

Dantzler and the offense took possession of the football late in the game. With 0:17 seconds left on the clock, Dantzler found Rod Gardner deep in South Carolina territory.

This put Aaron Hunt in a position to make the game-winning field goal. All the Tigers had to do was defend the kickoff with 0:03 seconds left on the clock, and they sent Lou Holtz back to Columbia with an L.

Clemson won 16-14 in Death Valley.

Other notable names that lined up for the Tigers that day:

  • Keith Adams: a legendary linebacker for the Tiger whose son, Keith Adams, Jr., is a running back on the 2023 squad
  • Nick Eason: current Defensive Line Coach for the Tigers
  • Jeff Scott: former Co-Offensive Coordinator for Dabo Swinney
