By John Chancey
A Clemson Football quarterback has been named to a unique college football preseason watchlist.
Sophomore Cade Klubnik has been named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award preseason watchlist. The award is given annually to the top offensive player in Division I college football who was born in the state of Texas, attended high school in Texas, or plays at a junior college or university in Texas.
The award is named after Earl Campbell, whose nickname is the Tyler Rose. Campbell was a star for the Texas Longhorns before a career in the NFL with the Houston Oilers and the New Orleans Saints. Campbell is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The award was created in 2023 by the Tyler (Texas) Chamber of Commerce. The first recipient was Bryce Petty from Baylor. Other recipients include Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray from Oklahoma, and JK Dobbins from Ohio State. Last season’s winner was Max Duggan from TCU.
Klubnik is one of seventy players named to the 2023 watchlist. He is joined by Ryan O’Keefe from Boston College, and Bradley Rozner from North Carolina State from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
