Clemson Football has another player who has been recognized on a preseason watchlist, and this time it is the expected starter behind center.

Cade Klubnik has been named to the preseason watchlist for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award.

The award has been given annually since 1977. It originally was given to the most outstanding player in the Southwest, regardless of position. It was named for Davey O’Brien, who played quarterback for TCU and won the Heisman Trophy in 1938. Earl Campbell of Texas was the first winner.

In 1981, the award was changed to the best quarterback in the nation. Jim McMahon of BYU was the first quarterback to win the award.

Clemson’s Deshaun Watson won the award twice, in 2015 and 2016. He is the only Tiger to have won the O’Brien.

The 2022 winner was Max Duggan from TCU, who played for current Clemson offensive coordinator Garrett Riley.

Other notable winners include Bryce Young from Alabama, Joe Burrow from LSU, Cam Newton from Auburn and Tim Tebow from Florida.

Klubnik joins multiple teammates who are now on watchlists, including Will Shipley, Jeremiah Trotter, Barrett Carter, Tyler Davis, Ruke Orhorhoro, Will Putnam, Jake Briningstool and his head coach Dabo Swinney.
