Are Barrett Carter and Jeremiah Trotter ready to lead the Clemson Football defense?

The excitement around the linebackers in 2022 was their athleticism and play-making ability. With the veteran leadership up front, they didn’t need Carter and Trotter to be the leaders of the defense.

Despite the departures to the NFL, there is still a lot of experience on this defense, but someone will have to step up to be the vocal leader. Linebackers are ideal for filling that role. They are in the middle of the defense, giving them both a good vantage point for how the offense is lining up and the ability to communicate with both the line ahead of them and the backfield behind them.

This team has veterans like Tyler Davis, Xavier Thomas, Jalyn Phillips, and Sheridan Jones, but it needs Carter and Trotter to be the voices for the defense.

There is little to no evidence to suggest they aren’t ready for that role. Carter’s personality shines when he speaks with the media. He has the charisma to connect with his teammates. Trotter’s instincts shine when you watch his tape. The growth of his understanding of the game throughout the 2022 season reminds me of the way Skalski grew into that role too.

If all the pieces fall into place for this defense (and they have that good luck avoiding injuries) then this can be a special season for this side. Carter and Trotter stepping into leadership roles is the most critical piece that needs to be in place.
