Clemson Tigers: One Quick Thing – If uniforms ain’t broke, don’t fix them
By John Chancey
The Clemson Tigers haven’t been afraid to make changes to their uniforms over the years, but for the most part, they have been consistent with logos, colors, and designs for decades, especially in football.
Many fans don’t know this but the Paw is only slightly over five decades old. It was adopted on July 21, 1970. Since then it has been a constant, and it would be heresy to consider changing the university’s main athletic logo.
That said, there are plenty of people who have spoken their opinion that the Tigers should be more active with alternative jerseys and helmets. I don’t think of myself as a traditionalist but I like the general rules for the uniforms: orange jersey at home, white on the road, white pants unless the team is playing for a championship, all purple on Military Appreciation Day, and NEVER touch the helmet.
I didn’t hate when the team gravitated to wearing more purple during the Tommy Bowden era, but it did make me nostalgic for the simpler days of orange, which is, of course, my favorite color.
Recently, I was bouncing around Twitter and came across this collection of ACC logo redesigns.
These pop up from time to time for various sports teams. Some of them are good and some aren’t, and this is no different. My favorites are NC State and Pitt. The UNC logo looks smarmy but somehow appropriate. The Georgia Tech logo looks like it’s about to cry, which again seems oddly appropriate considering the state of most Yellow Jacket teams. The Florida State logo is just flat out….well, if I can’t say anything nice, I shouldn’t say anything at all.
I don’t dislike the alternate Clemson logo here. In fact, I kind of like it. This logo, or something like it, would be a nice alternative logo. Just not a primary logo.
Clemson has worn true alternate uniforms once that I can remember. In the 1990s they wore uniforms inspired by the 1940s era.
The Clemson Tigers shouldn’t go crazy with alternative uniforms
Though I am a staunch supporter of the Paw, I liked these. I wouldn’t mind seeing something based on 1960s-era uniforms someday.
I don’t think something like this every once in a while is a bad thing. For a special occasion, I think it would be fun.
Beyond that, the cranky old man in me comes out. Clemson doesn’t need blackout jerseys, or chrome helmets, and if I hear one more person say they should use the baseball logo on the helmet I won’t be held accountable for the language of my inevitable response.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
