Jake Briningstool joins several of his teammates on a preseason watchlist for 2023. He has been named to the John Mackey Award watchlist.

The John Mackey Award is given annually to the best tight end in college football. Mackey was Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end that played for Syracuse before joining the Baltimore Colts and San Diego Chargers in the NFL.

This is the first time Briningstool has been named to the watchlist for the Mackey. While he has had significant playing time in his first two seasons at Clemson, this will be his first season as the starting tight end, following Davis Allen’s departure for the NFL.

The Mackey was first awarded in 2000. Dwayne Allen won the award at Clemson in 2011. Last season’s winner was Brock Bowers from Georgia. Other notable winners have been Kyle Pitts from Florida, Tyler Eifort from Notre Dame and Kellen Winslow II from Miami.

Briningstool joins fourty-seven other players on the 2023 watchlist. Other players from the Atlantic Coast Conference include George Takacs from Boston College, Jaheim Bell from Florida State, Elijah Arroyo from Miami, John Copenhaver and Bryson Nesbit from North Carolina, Trent Pennix from North Carolina State, Gavin Bartholomew from Pittsburgh, and Nick Gallo from Virginia Tech.

Trey Knox from South Carolina is the only other player from the Carolinas.

Other notable inclusions are Bowers, Austin Stogner from Oklahoma, Donovan Green from Texas A&M and Jacob Warren from Tennessee.
