Clemson Football: Oppo Research – South Carolina Gamecocks
By John Chancey
Clemson Football wraps up the regular season in Week 13 by visiting their archrival, the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Tigers will play in Williams Brice Stadium on November 25th. Time and network have not been announced.
Clemson leads the overall series with the Gamecocks 72-43-4. South Carolina broke Clemson’s seven-game winning streak in 2022 with a 31-30 victory in Death Valley. They also broke Clemson’s forty-game home winning streak.
Head coach Shane Beamer’s first two seasons in Columbia have been good, but he did face some adversity due to his choice on the new offensive coordinator. His decision to hire Dowell Loggains was met with scrutiny from several Gamecock fans and apathy from others.
Clemson’s eventual ability to lure Garrett Riley away from TCU put further attention on the hiring of Loggains as fans contrasted the two circumstances.
On the field, Loggains’s biggest asset is the return of quarterback Spencer Rattler, who passed on an entry into the NFL in favor of another year leading the SC offense. He will also have receiver Juice Wells and tight end Trey Knox, a transfer from Arkansas.
He will not have Jaheim Bell (transferred to Florida State) and MarShawn Lloyd (transferred to USC). Finding a reliable running back will be an early season priority.
Defensively the Gamecocks only have four returning starters plus two players who were expected to be starters in 2022 who are returning from lengthy injuries. There is young talent, especially in the secondary.
Clemson Football will be looking for revenge against the South Carolina Gamecocks
Given the results of last year’s contest, it is logical that the Gamecocks will have the Tigers’ full focus this season.
South Carolina should not be taken lightly by Tiger fans this season. Don’t let the most recent matchups in Williams-Brice fool you. It is much more challenging for Clemson in Columbia than playing in Death Valley. Rattler and his teammates will be playing with more confidence against the Tigers than they have had in a longtime.
Given the personnel losses this offseason, however, Clemson should prevail in this matchup if they live up to expectations.
