Teams that Clemson Football has played, but never beaten
By John Chancey
The Rest
There are some Group of Five programs that have beaten Clemson in their only meeting.
Army (1937): defeated Clemson 21-6 in West Point, NY – Army was pretty good back then so we should give them a pass on this one.
Marshall (1999): defeated Clemson 13-10 in Death Valley – Tommy Bowden’s first game as head coach of the Tigers. Marshall was undefeated that season. In fact, there were three undefeated Division 1-A (FBS) teams in 1999 – eventual national champion Florida State, Virginia Tech (with Michael Vick), and Marshall – and Clemson lost to all three of them.
South Florida (2010): defeated Clemson 31-26 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Charlotte, NC – I seem to recall this game being worse than five points, but it must have just felt that way. Perhaps it is the Mandela Effect. That was a long summer, but that season led to the hiring of Chad Morris. By the following fall, things were starting to look up.
Here are the rest of the programs that Clemson has played but not beaten.
- Sewanee (TN)
- Pacific (CA)
- Oglethorpe (GA)
- Jacksonville Naval Air Station
- Georgia Navy Pre-Flight
- Centre (KY)
- Camp Hancock (GA)
Finally, there are two programs that Clemson has played once and tied: Fordham and Cumberland (TN). So Clemson hasn’t beaten them, but they also haven’t beaten Clemson.
