Ole Miss Rebels

Of all the programs Clemson has played in the Southeastern Conference, there is only one that they have not beaten: the Ole Miss Rebels. Unlike the other examples so far, Clemson has played the Rebels twice, losing both times. Both games, however, were nearly a century ago.

The first encounter was in 1928. The head coach of Clemson was Josh Cody. The head coach of Ole Miss was Homer Hazel. The Tigers traveled to Oxford and lost 26-7. The Tigers would finish that season 8-3 while the Rebels would close at 5-4. Ole Miss only played two home games that season and won both of them.

The second meeting was in 1933. By this time, Jess Nealy had taken the reigns for the Tigers and Ed Walker was in charge of the Rebels. Once again, Clemson went on the road, this time to Meridian, Mississippi to play Ole Miss. Why Meridian? I haven’t got a clue. I tried to find out why but couldn’t find a hint. It didn’t matter. The results were the same. Ole Miss won 13-0.

For historical accuracy, I should point out that the Ole Miss team didn’t adopt the Rebels nickname until 1936. That puts into perspective how long ago these games were played.
