Clemson softball sweeps two, heads into Sunday 4-0 on young season
The Clemson softball team is looking to go deeper into the NCAA Tournament in 2023 and if the first four games in Miami are any indication, the team is headed in the right direction.
The Tigers swept two games on Saturday, opening with an 8-1 defeat of the Kansas City Roos, before downing Georgia State, 11-3 in six innings in game two.
Kansas City jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first off Clemson starter Brooke McCubbin (1-0).
After the Tigers tied it in the bottom of the second they blew it open with a 5-run bottom of the fourth, capped by a three-run homer by Maddie Moore that gave the Tigers a 6-1 lead.
Morgan Johnson’s 2 run sixth-inning single completed the scoring for the game.
McCubbin went 5 innings for the win, with Regan Spencer hurling the final two frames, retiring six in a row in a perfect outing.
The second game started similarly, with Georgia State pushing across a run in the top of the first for an early lead, before the Tigers came charging back with 8 consecutive runs before the Panthers scored two in the top of the sixth to make it 8-3.
Clemson ended it in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded double by JoJo Hyatt making it an 11-3 final for the Tigers.
Hyatt finished game two 3 for 4 with 7 RBI and went 6 for 7 with 8 RBI on the day.
Millie Thompson (2-0) pitched a complete game in game 2 for the win, striking out 4 and walking 0.
