Clemson Football: What’s in a number? Tigers get new jersey numbers
No detail is too small for many die-hard Clemson football fans and it seems like every year we’re surprised by number changes in the offseason.
When upperclassmen or transfers move on, the younger guys vie for their numbers of choice.
Maybe it was the one they wore in high school, or perhaps the one they’ve worn their entire life.
Athletes are weird about their jersey numbers. I know I was as a kid and even through high school.
Sometimes it has some significance to you for a reason and sometimes you get stuck with one and it becomes your lifelong “friend”.
Clemson football has updated its online roster and there have been several changes to the jersey numbers for the vets.
Corner Nate Wiggins who wore No. 20 most of the season, wore No. 2 in the Orange Bowl and that’s his new number heading into 2023.
Safety Sherrod Covil Jr. has switched from No. 12 to No. 5 and tight end Josh Sapp now sports No. 7.
Running back Phil Mafah will wear No. 7 and wide receiver Troy Stellato switches from No. 15 to No. 10. Hopefully that brings Mr. Stellato better luck.
Then there’s the new guys and here’s what the enrolled members of the 2023 Class look like number wise:
Jamal Anderson – 32
Khalil Barnes – 36
Vic Burley – 45
