Clemson Softball preparing for 2023 season
By John Chancey
We are closing in on the start of the fourth season of Clemson Softball. The Tigers have captured the hearts of the fanbase in just three years. In that time they won an ACC regular season championship, played in two regionals (hosting once), and played in their first super regional.
Coach John Rittman will lead Clemson through a season schedule that will include ten non-conference games against six programs from major conferences. Rittman signed a contract extension through the 2027 season this past summer.
The Tigers are led on the field by redshirt junior RHP/UTL Valerie Cagle. She was a first-team All-American in 2022, following up on her second-team placement in 2021. She won 16 games from the mound last season with seven shutouts and a 1.92 ERA.
Clemson’s pitching staff also returns LHP Millie Thompson. She was a third-team All-ACC selection in 2022 with 15 wins, five shutouts, and a 1.58 ERA.
In the field, Clemson welcomes back OF McKenzie Clark (All-ACC second-team), INF/OF Alia Logoleo (All-ACC third-team), and C/UTL Aby Viera (All-ACC Freshman team).
The Tigers added three veteran transfers during the offseason in INF Reedy Davenport (Florida Gulf Coast), OF Caroline Jacobsen (Duke), and OF Ally Miklesh (Wisconsin). All three spent four seasons with their previous programs and are expected to be contributors this season.
Clemson also adds freshman 1B/OF Marena Knowles, who was noted as one of the top newcomers to know in the nation by D1 Softball.
Clemson Softball has several strong non-conference opponents in 2023, as well as eight series against ACC schools
Clemson will start their 2023 season in the Felsberg Invitational on February 9th in Miami, Florida. They will first take on the host Florida International, followed by games against Georgia State and Missouri-Kansas City.
The Tigers will open their home schedule on February 17th when they host Northwestern in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. They will follow that with a doubleheader on the 18th, the first game against the Wildcats and the second against Ohio State.
Clemson will host South Carolina at McWhorter Stadium on March 28th and will visit Columbia on April 11th. They will open their ACC schedule at McWhorter on March 3rd against Syracuse.
