Clemson Tigers News: Etienne has arrived, Klubnik usage and more
Some said former Clemson football running back Travis Etienne was a wasted pick when the Jacksonville Jaguars took him with the 25th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
When he was injured and missed the entire 2021 season before ever playing a regular season down, the critics were howling, especially since the Jags struggled to a 3-14 season.
A year later it looks like a genius pick as Etienne is averaging 5.2 yards a carry and has surpassed the 1,100-yard mark with a week to go.
Etienne has been the perfect compliment for Trevor Lawrence, reduces the stress on the passing game and gives the Jaguars the ability to score on any play as he showed yesterday.
As a Clemson fan and now a casual Jags fan, they are fun to watch, especially on offense, but you can see them growing and learning each week.
Sunday they will play Tennessee for the AFC South title and a playoff spot after going 3-14 a season ago.
Remarkable.
Clemson football quarterback Cade Klubnik ran or passed on 74 of the team’s 101 plays in the Orange Bowl
Clemson ran 101 plays from scrimmage in the Orange Bowl and Cade Klubnik either threw (54) or ran (20) on 74 of them, which was reminiscent of the Tajh Boyd era.
That seems like a lot of wear and tear for a 195-pound freshman, even if it was the last game of the season.
Not all of the runs were designed, of course, but as our own John Chancey pointed out, the play calls left a lot to be desired.
Can Clemson basketball continue success in ACC?
As football goes to offseason, basketball cranks up and it’s a big week for Brad Brownell’s Tigers as they travel to Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh on Wednesday and Saturday, respectively.
The Tigers aren’t favored in either game if you believe the KenPom.com prognostications and that seems fair to me, though it’s close.
Of course, you’d like to come out of the week 5-0 in the ACC, but I would feel good if the week ended with the Tigers 4-1 in the conference, especially if they have to do it without Alex Hemenway.
