Clemson Football: Early odds for Tigers and Seminoles

Fresh off a resounding 31-3 win over Boston College, Clemson football readies for another task as they travel to Tallahassee for a night game against the Florida State Seminoles.

The odds makers installed the Tigers as an early 7.5-point favorite, which was immediately bet down to 6.5 and now sits at 3.5.

After covering the 20.5 spread against Boston College in a 31-3 win, the Tigers are 3-3 against the number on the season and 3-3 on the over/under.

The rejuvenated Seminoles present a completely different challenge than a depleted Boston College team and that’s reflected in the point spread in this game.

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis is a dual threat who has completed 62.8% of his passes for 1,407 yards, 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

The Tigers have most recently played two quarterbacks more of the NFL dropback mold in Devin Leary of North Carolina State and Phil Jurkovec of Boston College.

The Seminoles have played Clemson’s two toughest opponents of the season the last two weeks, losing to Wake Forest 31-21 at home and falling to North Carolina State 19-17 in Raleigh.

On the season the Seminoles are 4-2 against the number and 2-4 on the over/under.

The decision likely comes down to the number you bet this at.  If you took this immediately at 7.5 the smart money is on the Seminoles as the hook looms large and it gets you past the key number of 7.

On the other hand, if you waited and got it under 7, perhaps as low as 3.5, Clemson may be the play as that’s literally just a one-play difference.

Florida State is much improved and this likely won’t be a book-reading laugher of recent seasons, but Clemson is widely believed to have the stronger overall football team at this time.

The Tigers defense is getting healthy at the right time and the recent return of Xavier Thomas and Tre Williams has buoyed that group.

The play of quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei on the road for the second consecutive week will be a huge component for sure.

Uiagalelei has thrown for 14 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions, while only having three turnover-worthy plays on the season per PFF.com.

If Uiagalelei can perform at a high level, I like the Tigers chances of covering the current number.
