Clemson Football: Tigers offer Wake Forest verbal commitment
Now this is college football at it’s finest. Wake Forest verbal commitment Khalil Barnes announced an offer from Clemson football on Thursday, just two days before the teams meet in Winston-Salem, where Barnes is scheduled to be a guest of the Demon Deacons.
Is there any chance the timing of the offer was a coincidence?
Barnes is a 6’1, 185 pound athlete out of North Oconee High in Bogart, Georgia that’s expected to be a defensive back at the next level.
A 3 star recruit that’s ranked outside of the top 1,000 nationally, it’s an interesting offer from Clemson, timing aside.
Barnes has just a smattering of P5 offers – Purdue, Duke and Kansas State – in addition to Wake and Clemson.
The Tigers have three corner backs and a safety already committed, in addition to athlete Kylen Webb who’s also pegged for the defensive backfield, so Barnes would theoretically be the 6th defensive back commitment of the 2023 class should he flip his commitment to Clemson at some point.
Besides Webb, the other Clemson defensive backfield commitments are Avieon Terrell, Brandon Strozier, Robert Billings and Shelton Lewis.
Apparently, not all of the drama in Winston-Salem this weekend will take place on the field as Clemson football has offered a Wake verbal commitment
The Tigers 2022 class was also strong on the back end and included Jeadyn Lukus, Toriano Pride, Sherrod Covil, Wade Woodaz, Myles Oliver and Kylon Griffin.
Pride, Lukus and Covil saw extensive action in last week’s game, while Woodaz has seen time this season as a linebacker and Oliver was lost for the season in the fall.
Lukus and Pride struggled in coverage against Louisiana Tech after being thrust into the heat of action due to injury.
Despite it’s lofty recruiting rankings, Clemson likes to position itself as a developmental program and it’s likely the coaches see something in Barnes that they believe portends well for the future.
