Wow did I get some feedback from last week’s power rankings. I loved the interaction and truly appreciate it. From the ribbing by friends whom I broke bread with this weekend at the Clemson football – Louisiana Tech game, or the ones from social media. That was a lot of fun. So much so, that I am going to attempt to continue to do these weekly until season’s end when things will look a bit clearer in the ACC.
What a difference a week makes. Florida State and Louisville played a really fun game on Friday night, it was must watch tv and a heck of a showcase for the conference. Wake Forest, Clemson’s next opponent (preview coming of Wake towards the end of the week) took some 4th quarter heroics to beat Liberty. Syracuse beat a B1G team, while stud running back Sean Tucker was held in check. The story lines go on and on from the weekend.
Week 3 is done and gone and we look at my ACC Power Rankings.
No. 14 – 10
14. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-2) – Back to their rightful place at the bottom of the ACC. Rumors are flying that head coach Geoff Collins will be relieved of his duties before their upcoming tilt with UCF. A completely lackluster performance in week 3 versus Ole Miss lands GT back to the basement.
13. Boston College Eagles (1-2) – You wouldn’t think that a victory versus Maine would allow BC to move up in the power rankings, but I believe it is more a testament to how down Georgia Tech is than how good BC is. Still under-achieving based on how a healthy Phil Jurkovec and Zay Flowers have looked in the past. The talent is there, but is the coaching? Or were we fooled two years ago? Game at Florida State this weekend could get ugly early.
12. Virginia Tech Hokies- (2-1) – Virginia Tech does not move this week in the rankings as the loss to ODU remains top of mind. A convincing 20-point victory versus FCS Wofford Saturday, however Wofford had been held scoreless in their two previous games (Chattanooga and Elon) and VT allowed a TD to the Terriers. A big game with West Virginia looms on Thursday evening in Blacksburg.
11. Virginia Cavaliers (2-1) – 2 point victory versus Old Dominion and UVA stays put at 11. They did something that Virginia Tech couldn’t, beat the Monarchs. It wasn’t pretty but Brennah Armstrong is a gamer and WR Keytaon Thompson starred for the Cavaliers. A huge contest with Syracuse (never thought I’d say that) looms in the ACC’s Friday night game.
10. Louisville Cardinals – (1-2) – What a game Friday night versus Florida State. It was hard to tell if either team is any good as of yet, but it sure was fun to watch. Malik Cunningham is still good at football and tried to single-handedly will his team to victory. However, it takes 21 other teammates to win a football game. And I am not sure the cast around Cunningham is very good. They get South Florida at home this weekend, and should add to the win total.
