Despite some college football talking head sentiment to the contrary, Clemson football remained fifth in the latest AP College Football Poll.

The Georgia Bulldogs, fresh off a 48-7 blasting of the South Carolina Gamecocks in a sparsely populated Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, received 59 of 63 first place votes.

Second ranked Alabama received three first place votes and Ohio State received a first place vote and came in at number 3.

The Michigan Wolverines held steady at number four, followed by Clemson and then Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners.

In my opinion there’s a clear number one in college football and that’s the Georgia Bulldogs, followed by Alabama, Ohio State and maybe Michigan, though I think it’s still to be determined if the Wolverines are playoff worthy or schedule light.

The Tigers totaled 1268 points, just eleven more than the Sooners, who some felt should have moved ahead of Clemson based on Oklahoma’s 49-14 win over Nebraska and Clemson’s lackluster performance to date.

The top 10 is rounded out by Southern Cal, Kentucky, Oklahoma State and Arkansas.

Number eleven through 20 are: Tennessee, North Carolina State, Utah, Penn State, Oregon, Ole Miss, Baylor, Washington, BYU and Florida.

Clemson’s next opponent, Wake Forest, comes in at number 21, followed by Texas, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh and Miami, FL.

Clemson football has two straight games against top 25 teams in the next two weeks

Clemson’s next two games will come against teams that are ranked, with the aforementioned Wake Forest up in Winston-Salem next Saturday, followed by the number 12 North Carolina State Wolfpack in Clemson on October 1st.

The Tigers have yet to play a complete game, struggling in the first half against what looks like another bad Georgia Tech team and Conference USA member Louisiana Tech and in the second half against FCS Furman.

As I tend to say, these polls don’t mean a whole lot, because eventually Ohio State and Michigan will play each other and someone is going to lose and drop a spot or two.

If Clemson continues to win these things continue to take care of themselves and the Tigers have two opportunities against top 25 teams in the next two weeks.
