On the surface, not a lot is going on in the recruiting world for Clemson football, but that doesn’t mean things aren’t happening behind the scenes as the Tigers still have needs to fill and other areas to assess.

While the coaches are busy preparing for the season opener things have quieted from the commitment perspective, but the fans are still looking for a running back in the 2023 cycle.

We’ve suggested previously that the Tigers may end up taking a more developmental type running back this cycle and work towards getting a bigger name in the 2024 cycle.

Some aren’t exactly thrilled with the pace of recruiting at the position, but apparently this is how it’s been done at Clemson for some time and while I can’t recall that being the case, I trust Jason Priester’s evaluation of the situation.

The names mentioned after Christopher Johnson, Jamarion Wilcox and John Randle, are further down the food chain than you would think Clemson would go given the status of the program and pedigree of running back in recent history.

It’s still a mystery to me in some ways, but in other ways I understand it and while I struggle with my line of thinking that other schools of Clemson’s caliber don’t have similar problems, it could be my lack of knowledge of the recruiting and depth situations at competing schools.

It also sounds like the Tigers are done on the offensive line unless something unusual happens.  Otherwise they’ll stick with the three they currently have committed in Ian Reed, Zechariah Owens and Harris Sewell.

Things have quieted down on the Clemson football recruiting front, but that doesn’t mean wheels aren’t turning behind the scenes

Priester did mention the additional nuggets that I missed from the last go round on Tomarrion Parker, that perhaps Clemson had an inkling he was going to back off his Penn State commitment and that’s why Daevin Hobbs doesn’t have a Clemson offer.  Also, maybe notable, maybe not, Parker’s father is a long time Clemson fan.

Who knows if either of those played a role, but Parker is the 100th overall ranked player in the 2023 class, so it’s nice to believe the Tigers have some type of advantage, even if it’s just in my mind.

Parker is scheduled for an unofficial for the Furman game, but it looks like it’ll be a Tiger – Gator battle to the end.
