Clemson football held it’s second and final preseason scrimmage Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.

The first thing that stands out to me is that two scrimmages doesn’t feel like enough.  On the other hand, every time someone gets injured, I think two is too many.  Scrimmages giveth and scrimmages taketh away.

Apparently the defense had a better day than they did on Saturday, with interceptions from Nate Wiggins and Toriano Pride and the Tigers did a lot of situational work, including overtime, which didn’t go as well as hoped.

Maybe the biggest news was there were no new injuries reported, which is a relief.  Yes, injuries happen to every team, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t something to be concerned about and let’s face it, not all injuries are the same.

It’s difficult to contextualize the results of the scrimmage as “situational work” could mean a lot of things, but it sounds like the slots got a lot of work as both Brannon Spector and Antonio Williams were mentioned post-scrimmage.

Williams is intriguing to me, because I think he offers more upside, but Spector could be the “steady veteran” option as Williams works to get used to the speed of the college game.  I’m interested in seeing how this plays out as the season progresses.

Clemson football held it’s 2nd and final scrimmage Wednesday and the offensive line again received positive feedback from the coaches as the season approaches

There was more general praise for the offensive line, but I’m taking a wait and see approach with that unit because of recent history and new offensive line coach Thomas Austin.  This could be a situation where a new coach can be a blessing, but I won’t know that until somewhere down the road in-season.

Also interesting was Dabo’s remarks on Xavier Thomas – he would miss the Georgia Tech game, but then they would go from there.  That sounds encouraging, but also leaves it open that he could miss additional games.

Remember, as I’ve pointed out repeatedly, those first three games come at you fast – once the season starts Clemson plays three games in 12 days.
