Bulldogs aren’t in a terrible position right now. They are still in play with several recruits right now. They have a small class at the moment, but their average rating is better than a lot of other programs. A key commitment or two could boost them past a few teams.
There are two deficiencies I see with their class right now. They are almost the polar opposite of Penn State: they have good quality, but they lack depth. They have as many recruits in the Top 200 as any school, but they have only one recruit ranked 201-400. Most of Georgia’s direct peers, like Ohio State & Clemson, have the same quality, with more depth.
Their other concern? Like the Nittany Lions, they have no quarterback commit. They had a place at the table during the Arch Manning poker game, and they never folded. They went right down to the end and never flinched. They just didn’t have the winning hand. Now, they are going to Plan B. I’m sure Plan B is decent, but it isn’t completely clear right now what it is.
Some might say “Georgia is loaded at quarterback, they will be fine”. That’s a bit presumptive in the free transfer era. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a quarterback transfer (or two) before the start of the 2023 season. The counter is that Georgia can always take a transfer, and that is fair, but again, most of their peers have either a Top 50 quarterback in their class, or multiple Top 100 quarterbacks.
This class is good for the time being, but if the Dawgs don’t start landing some big recruits, this class will be seen as a disappointment. This is the class where Georgia needs to cash in on their breakthrough national championship. If they don’t land more big names, they will have squandered the opportunity.
