Give Steve Sarkisian credit: he stepped up to the Arch Manning poker table with Kirby Smart and didn’t fold. He held the winning hand and got the commitment from Manning. Prior to that, Sark got one of the biggest transfer players following the 2021 season in Quin Ewers.

Quin Ewers 247 Composite rating was a 1.000, the highest rating possible. Arch Manning’s current 247 Composite rating is a 1.000. Coach Sarkisian, in theory, will have two players tied for the highest high school recruiting rating in history on his roster in 2023. No pressure.

Ewers will get the first shot, as he is expected to start for the Longhorns in 2022. It wasn’t Ewers, however, that brought the hype that got Texas’s recruiting class rolling. That was Manning, whose commitment announcement was followed by a flurry of commitments that was only rivaled by Clemson this summer. Twelve Top 400 commitments, with three from the Top 50.

Ewers isn’t eligible to go to the NFL until after the 2023 season, so we could be looking at a situation where Manning may have to realistically ride the pine as a freshman, but that is only if Ewers leaves no doubt in 2022. Otherwise, Manning could take the job.
