There has been a lot of shade thrown towards the Tigers, for a handful of reasons, but head coach Dabo Swinney quieted a lot of the static with a huge June official visit weekend that got commitments from several recruits. As we said, the only team that had a comparable summer so far has been Texas.
Clemson has 16 Top 400 recruits. There are only two programs with more, and they are the two ranked ahead of Clemson on this list. Clemson has the fifth best average rating thus far. While it’s been a good summer for Clemson, I question if they will remain ranked this high as the recruiting cycle closes, for a couple of reasons.
First, I’m not sure how many more recruits Clemson will go after from this point on. They will likely get to at least 20 total, maybe more, but most of the work is done for the Tigers, while programs like Alabama and Georgia are likely going to adding several more highly rated recruits.
Second, Clemson just didn’t get in with a lot of Top 100 recruits early in the cycle the way they often have in the past. That is likely a product of Clemson’s first non-playoff season in several years, as well as the turnover at the coordinator positions. It is very possible that this is a one-year dip, because if Clemson performs on the field in 2022, while new coordinators Wes Goodwin and Brandon Streeter show they are capable, it is likely that 2024 Top 100 recruits won’t have the same hesitation that 2023 recruits appear to have had about the Tigers’ future.
