Clemson football held a Media Day in advance of the ACC Football Kickoff which will be held over the next two days at the Westin in Charlotte.

There were many takeaways for a fan base thirsty for knowledge on a 2022 team that’s looking to get back into the playoff hunt.

Some news of note:

At quarterback, D.J. Uiagalelei has lost 30-35 pounds, is healthy (knee) and is in a good spot mentally per Brandon Streeter who says competition has helped D.J. get better and that D.J. had a great spring.

Cade Klubnik is up to 195 pounds vs. the 179 he reported at in January.  I was leading the charge on this one, having seen Klubnik for two years (l live in Austin area) and he looked skinny vs. Texas High School Football players, much less Division I.

Streeter said they threw Klubnik in the fire once he arrived, he got better and better every, is going to be a good leader, can make all the throws and get you out of a jam (with his legs).

Thomas Austin indicated the offensive line will start out like this:

  • Left tackle: Jordan McFadden
  • Left Guard: Marcus Tate
  • Center: Will Putnam (Ryan Linthicum and Trent Howard battling for second spot day by day)
  • Right Guard: Mitchell Mayes/Bryn Tucker
  • Right Tackle: Walker Parks

Austin said everyone was 100% healthy going into camp.  For my money this is important because injuries will happen during the season along both lines.  Building depth is important.

Wes Goodwin says defense will “look” similar to Venables defense and is one of the deepest he’s seen

Interesting comments from Wes Goodwin who said the defense will “look” very similar to a Venables defense, intimating that there will be differences that the untrained eye won’t notice.

Goodwin also said this (coordinator) has been a lifelong goal of his, has been a lot of fun and, in a comment that should surprise no one, this is one of the deepest defenses he’s been around.

Practice begins August 5th and the Tigers have 31 days to get in 25 preseason practices.
