June 2023 has been Clemson’s best month for recruiting in a very long time.
Clemson football recruiting is having one of their most successful months ever. We must go back in history a decade to find a month that had a comparable number of commitments for the Tigers.
Volume is great, but quality is a consideration too. Sometimes, especially early in the recruiting year, some schools’ classes rank very high because the calculation to determine strength includes both volume and quality.
For example, if you look at the 247 Composite team rankings for the Class of 2023, you will see the Texas Tech Raiders, a Power Five school that isn’t considered a top-tier program. At the time of this writing, they rank #6. That is a very impressive ranking until we see that Texas Tech has 21 commitments while many of the teams in the Top 10 have 10-15 commitments. They only have three 4-star recruits and 15 3-stars. The balance are 2-stars or aren’t rated.
The Red Raiders have an average rating of 87.89, while the major programs average ratings north of 90.00. Their class is larger, but they lack the highly rated players that other programs have landed.
Some Clemson classes of the last decade have been ranked outside the Top 10 because they were small classes. Their average rating was as good or better than most of the programs at the top of the rankings, but because they lacked the volume, they were ranked lower.
How does Clemson’s Class of 2023 compare to the Clemson classes of previous years? Clemson has gotten the volume in June, but are they getting the quality?
