Clemson baseball: Tiger commit projected 1st round pick
By John Baker
Clemson commit Brock Porter is projected to be drafted in the first round of this year’s MLB draft.
The Orchard Lake, Michigan native was recently announced as the winner of the 2022 Gatorade National player of the Year which goes to the most outstanding high school baseball player in America. Porter led his team to a third straight state title, finished with no losses and was the top ranked high school baseball team in America. In June of 2019 Porter announced that he was committing to Clemson, and has even expressed that he remains committed to the Tigers despite the recent firing of Monte Lee and hiring of Erik Bakich. However, Porter has been named a top prospect for this year’s draft, and is projected to be drafted somewhere in the first round.

Brock Porter is a top name in this year’s draft.
The Athletic has Porter being drafted by the New York Yankees in their latest mock draft (25th overall).
"Porter has emerged as one of the top high school right-handers in this class, and right now is the best bet to be the first arm taken from anywhere in the class. He’s been up to 97 this spring with good arm-side run on the pitch, while both his curveball and changeup project as at least above-average offerings when he starts using them more. He offers a ton of projection on his 6-4 frame, with a long stride toward the plate and good extension over his front side. He’s also committed to Clemson, but he’s pitched well enough this spring that he should go high enough to sign."
There are thoughts that Porter would end up signing and heading straight for the pro’s. It is safe to say that with this type of money being a factor and a chance to play for a historic club, the Tigers may not have a chance to see Porter in Orange and Purple next season. But one can only hope, and time will tell. Tiger fans should keep an eye on the draft this season and see how this plays out.
On the flip side, Max Wagner, who was once projected in the first round has now fallen out of that range.
