Clemson baseball: So, you’re saying there’s a chance?
A funny thing happened on the way to another disastrous Clemson baseball season. The Tigers have seemingly found their way and a way to win the last two weeks.
Don’t look now, but after the horror that was Notre Dame, Indiana the Tigers have reeled off 7 wins in their last 9 games, including series wins over Wake Forest and Florida State.
It certainly hasn’t been perfect, but college baseball rarely is and the teams that generally win are the ones that keep coming, keep pounding and keep the faith.
The Tigers now sit at 26-14 overall and 6-11 in the ACC (more on that in a minute), and 35th in the latest RPI rankings.
Clemson is 8-11 against quadrant 1 teams, 5-2 vs. quadrant 2, 5-0 vs. quadrant 3 and 8-1 against quadrant 4, with that loss to Northeastern still biting the Tigers a bit.
Clemson faces a 5 game schedule this week, with Presbyterian on Tuesday and Wofford on Wednesday, before travelling to Louisville for the weekend.
This may come as a shock to you, as it did me, but Wofford is currently has the 10th best RPI in college baseball, while Louisville is 40th.
Before the Tigers worry about anything else though, they still need to worry about making an ACC Tournament that only includes 12 of the 14 teams that play baseball, and based on winning percentage Clemson is currently 13th and would not be in the tournament if the season ended today.
But the season doesn’t end today and after Louisville the Tigers face a daunting conference schedule of Georgia Tech (home), Virginia (away) and Boston College (home).
Not cupcake city, but neither Duke nor North Carolina, the two teams closest to Clemson, have an easy road either. Yes, I’m saying there’s a chance.
In the end, the Tigers have put themselves in this position, but they also have an opportunity to pull themselves out of it.
After the fourteen game winning streak to start the season this team hit a malaise for some reason and it seemed like they waited too long to pull themselves out of it.
Maybe they did, maybe not.
It was frustrating to see a team with so much talent not be able to put it together for nine innings and at times look like they had no interest in doing so.
It’s now fun to watch this team battle.
The next month will tell if Clemson’s season was lost on a couple of cold days in Pittsburgh or that was just a bump in the baseball road on the way to a successful season.
