Clemson football: What’s left to accomplish in 2021 season?
Barring something drastic and completely unprecedented, the 2021 Clemson football team isn’t going to the CFB Playoff.
Shocking, right?
Currently, Clemson possesses an abysmal 2-2 overall record and the Tigers are already behind the eight-ball in terms of even winning their division following a loss to NC State in Raleigh last weekend.
Now, as we look towards the remaining eight games, it can begin to seem like this is simply a ‘throwaway season’ for the Tigers, but do Clemson football fans really want to see these next two months completely wasted?
What’s left to accomplish in 2021 for Clemson football?
Despite the terrible start to this season, every single goal that Clemson generally sets for itself is still on the table.
The Tigers still can:
- Win the Division
- Win the State Championship
- Win the Conference
- Win their Bowl Game
No, there won’t be any CFB Playoff. It will likely take months of winning emphatically before the Tigers are even back inside the top-15 and top-10. And, let’s be honest here: If Clemson plays the way that it has through the first four games of the season, the Tigers won’t be winning the division, the conference or possibly even the state championship.
That being said, we’re trying to look on the bright side here just a little bit. We’ve discussed the problems— and will continue to– but we also just wanted to give a little light despite the dark cloud hanging over this program currently.
Clemson will likely need to run the table to win the division, but that’s not out of the question. The Tigers will need NC State to lose two games, or they’ll need a team like Wake Forest to beat the Wolfpack and win out. Then, there would be a three-way tie.
The truth of the matter, though, is that NC State still has four very losable games on its schedule– Boston College, Wake Forest, Louisville and UNC– and if the Tigers take care of their business, there’s a great chance they’ll still end up ACC Atlantic Champs.
I’m not saying it’s likely at this point, but how refreshing would it be to finish the year with a 12-2 overall record that included an ACC Championship and a New Year’s Six Bowl victory at this point?
It’s the best case scenario right now and it’s what we should be pulling for as Clemson football fans. Is it the most likely? No. But that still doesn’t change the fact that there are still goals that this team can accomplish during the remainder of this season despite how bad things have been thus far.
