Three growing concerns for Clemson football coming out of fall camp 2021

2. The depth at cornerback

Depth at cornerback was a discussion being had well before fall camp began, but with the Fred Davis news, it has become an even bigger question mark.

Clemson’s starting cornerbacks, according to Dabo Swinney, are going to be Andrew Booth Jr. and Mario Goodrich. That leaves Sheridan Jones, Malcolm Greene, and freshman Nathaniel Wiggins at the position. It should be noted that freshman safety Andrew Mukuba has also seen time at cornerback and the returns are good.

Still, at most, you’re talking about six bodies– two of which are true-freshmen– at the cornerback position for your season opener.

Sheridan Jones has shown flashes, but he was also picked on at times last season. For reference, go back and watch the Notre Dame game in South Bend.

Booth has an opportunity to be an All-American type player and we’re not concerned at all about him at the position. Goodrich has experience, but he still hasn’t shown consistency. Can the veteran play at an elite level when we all know he’s going to be who Georgia targets in the passing game?

There’s talent at this position and we’re not saying it’s all doom and gloom, but depth is certainly a concerning element of the cornerback position.
