Three things we know about the DJ Uiagalelei Dr. Pepper ‘Fansville’ commercial

2. Clemson hasn’t given athletes the rights to brand trademarks yet

One of the other things we noticed quickly is that Clemson hasn’t given student-athletes the rights to use university trademarks as of yet.

Justyn Ross released his own merchandising brand earlier this summer and he can be seen wearing an orange jersey, but with no Tiger paw.

From an image released– first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger– Uiagalelei can be seen wearing an orange jersey with the No. 5, but there is no likeness to it being a Clemson jersey and the trademarked Paw won’t be appearing in the commercial.

While Clemson hasn’t yet given student-athletes the rights to use that paw in their NIL endeavors, we wouldn’t be surprised if that doesn’t change down the road.

Ohio State announced a new licensing program that will allow its student-athletes to benefit from the university’s trademarks earlier this summer. That means football players, for example, can be videoed in their OSU attire and it will be perfectly legal.

We can expect that more colleges will be following suit in the near future and it wouldn’t be surprising if by next football season, we can see Uiagalelei in a ‘Fansville’ commercial wearing his Clemson gear.

For now, though, players aren’t allowed to use that Paw in their NIL endeavors.
