The best case-scenarios for Clemson football and the ACC in conference realignment

3. The ACC solidifies its brand and merges with the SEC

This isn’t going to happen overnight, but perhaps one of the best case-scenarios for Clemson football and the ACC would be to merge with the SEC at some point down the road.

If the ACC could solidify its brands and begin to generate more revenue– we’re looking at Florida State, Virginia Tech and Miami improvements– and the conference could work out a deal with Notre Dame or bring in a brand like Penn State, as we talked about earlier, that would be an appealing offer for the SEC to consider.

The rumor has been that the SEC wants to create a megaconference that would be almost like a minor league for the NFL. If that’s the case, the conference will need more teams at some point and what better conference– at least geographically– would be in shape than the ACC to perform such a merger?

There are many who believe we could see a situation where College Football becomes more of a ‘megaconference’ sport with potentially only two conferences, possibly three, and interestingly enough, finding a way to affiliate yourself with the innovator in all this would be a power move for the ACC.
