The best case-scenarios for Clemson football and the ACC in conference realignment

2. The ACC poaches another power or more

Hate on the SEC all you want, but that’s a conference that has been innovative and out in front of the game. Love the ACC all you want, but that’s a conference that has been behind the eight ball all too many times and reactionary.

If the ACC is going to be successful during this next period of conference realignment, it has to first find a way to right the wrong in Notre Dame.

Perhaps adding another power– or more– could be enticing enough for the Irish to join?

The ACC has a legitimate pitch for a school like Penn State in terms of geography, renegotiating a new contract, and potentially partnering them with Notre Dame. Penn State– and a few other Big Ten schools– isn’t necessarily happy with the leadership of the Big Ten and that at least opens up the door for the ACC.

Penn State isn’t likely to leave because of the revenue the Big Ten is producing– more than $50 million per year– but we’re talking ‘best case-scenarios’ and for the ACC to be competitive, it’s going to need brand relevance.

West Virginia and UCF don’t move the needle. Notre Dame and Penn State– and there are a few others in the same stratosphere, as well– do. It’s that simple.
