Other Big Ten schools

So, what if the ACC isn’t able to lure a big name like Ohio State away from the Big Ten?

Obviously, it wouldn’t seem likely for the Buckeyes to leave, but that doesn’t mean there wouldn’t be a few others who would jump at the potential to enter a new league especially if you were including Notre Dame in the package.

What about?

  • Penn State
  • Michigan State
  • Wisconsin
  • Nebraska

All four of these names would be surprise targets for the ACC, but they’re not names that you can completely rule out of the equation.

Penn State makes a lot of sense in terms of geography when you consider what the ACC already has in the northeast. Though Nebraska is far away from the geographic footprint of the ACC, the Cornhuskers have made their grievances with the Big Ten clear in the past and if the Big 12 is faltering, perhaps they’d look at some other options even if it meant travel was going to pick up.

Still, we think more likely than the ACC poaching teams from the Big Ten would be a merger of some kind between the two conferences, but we’ll have more on that here on Rubbing the Rock later and what that could look like for Clemson football.
