Clemson football report: Taisun Phommachanh to return early this fall
Clemson football QB Taisun Phommachanh suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the annual Orange & White Spring Game this past April.
While most assumed that Phommachanh would miss most- if not all- of the 2021 season, that seems as if it might not be the case after all.
Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei told the media Thursday afternoon that Phommachanh should be back by the first home game of the season when the Tigers play S.C. State in Death Valley on September 11, according to reports from The Clemson Insider.
The Clemson football team needs added depth at the quarterback position and this could be promising news
While nothing should be taken as a guarantee at this point, the words coming from Uiagalelei and the positivity resonating from the Clemson football coaching staff tells us that Phommachanh must be progressing rather well.
There’s no guarantee that just because Uiagalelei says Phommachanh will be back by Sept. 11th that he’ll get the necessary medical clearance and that the backup quarterback will be completely ready to go by then, but it does at least paint a picture of what the Tigers are expecting for this season.
We thought it was going to be Uiagalelei, Hunter Helms, Will Taylor and Billy Wiles. Upon hearing this news, though, we can now assume that while Phommachanh will likely still miss preseason camp and will still be working back, that the Tigers are going to have him for most of the season.
That’s huge news in terms of quarterback depth.
Phommachanh still has plenty of areas to improve and there’s a noted drop-off between the talent of Uiagalelei and where he stands, but it’s still great news to get him back and know that you’ll have an experienced player at the position if something were to happen.
