South Carolina’s football head coach Shane Beamer won SEC media day Monday but that won’t translate to wins on the field anytime soon, especially against Clemson football.
You cannot fault Beamer; he is a young guy ready to prove to the world that he is a winner and is telling everyone that South Carolina has all the tools needed to compete with Clemson football for national championships.
He could be right, they may have all the right tools, but tools are useless in the hands of those who do not know how to use them. Giving a mechanic tools to install carpet renders the tools and the mechanic useless.
The problem with Beamer claiming South Carolina has all the tools to win championships is that he has never as a player, or a coach won a national championship. The closest he came was during his playing days at Virginia Tech and everyone in Blacksburg rode Michael Vick to a national title game loss to Florida State.
Even then, Vick was the only person to show up that day for the Hokies and was a one-man show.
Beamer will learn the hard way – Carolina is decades behind Clemson
Gamecocks across the Southeast love to tell people they got next. They also love to tell people that Clemson football is cycling out. Yet they continue to fall further behind while the Tigers continue their ascension into the college football history books.
Their trophy case continues to collect dust while the Allen N. Reeves Football Operations Complex continues to accumulate trophies and rings. Clemson football continues to mass-produce NFL draft picks, while the Gamecocks beg NFL head coaches to put on a Gamecock shirt and say nice things about their facilities. (Yes, their facility is nice)
The two programs are not the same – never have been and never will be.
South Carolina is in the middle of what will be seven consecutive losses (should be eight) to Clemson football, yet all they seem to talk about is that one time in the 100 plus year history of the rivalry they beat Clemson football five straight times.
It was so long ago, that the star of those teams is on his fifth NFL team. Hell, it was so long ago that there are kids who have never seen Clemson football lose to South Carolina – on the field or in recruiting.
Beamer and Carolina fans can continue to talk about how great things are in Columbia, meanwhile, Clemson will continue to recruit, develop, and win at an elite level. Something that Beamer will never do in Columbia.
