Clemson football: QB depth is starting to take shape after the start of MLB draft

The first round of the Major League Baseball draft ended Sunday night without Clemson football commits Bubba Chandler or Will Taylor.

Sunday evening Major League Baseball held its first round, 1 C, and Competitive Balance A rounds of their first-round, those equate to the first 36 picks of the draft and so far the Clemson football commitments of the 2021 class remain on the board.

The money is the big part of why guys either decide to sign with the first team that drafted them or heads off to college and the money changes in the second round.

Had Bubba Chandler gone in the Top 10 of the draft as some predicted, he would have netted a signing bonus between $4.7-$8.9 million. If he is taken at the top of round two, the Clemson football quarterback commit is looking at a bonus of around $1.99 million.

Still not chump change, but it’s hardly life-changing and will make both Chandler and Taylor think twice about whether coming to play football and baseball at Clemson is worth putting off pro baseball for another three seasons.

Quarterback depth will be the biggest issue for Clemson football

Currently, both Will Taylor and Bubba Chandler are listed as quarterbacks on the Clemson football depth chart. Other than the two of them the only other healthy quarterbacks on the roster are starter DJ Uiagalelei and Hunter Helms.

Backup quarterback Taisun Phommachanh tore his Achilles in the final play of the 2021 spring scrimmage and more than likely will not be ready to start the 2021 college football season.

Chandler and Taylor are crucial to providing depth for the Tigers at a position that has not had depth issues since 2014.

We are currently hearing that Will Taylor will more than likely enroll soon and officially become a Tiger. The next 24 hours will determine the future for Bubba Chandler as the Major League Baseball draft continues Monday.

Rounds 2-10 will take place Monday, July 12th, and rounds 11 through the end of the draft will take place Tuesday, July 13th.

Monte Lee and Clemson baseball will more than likely not get signee Joe Mack as he was selected in the CB-A part of round one by the Marlins.
