1. Without solidified rules in place, it will become an SEC lovefest

Perhaps the biggest reason why Clemson football fans would not like the expanded field has to do with the SEC lovefest we would have to endure year after year.

Right now in the field of four, we hear the argument every single season about how “the SEC should have two teams in the field.”

Can you imagine what the arguments are going to be if the field is expanded to 12 teams?

We could be talking about a playoff with six at-large bids and four of them go the SEC. We will have to endure 9-3 Texas A&M getting in over 10-2 teams from other Power-5 leagues because “their strength of schedule is just so strong.”

We’ll have to endure SEC programs- like South Carolina- who get left out pulling out their SEC caps and yelling ‘Roll Tide’ when they have the most teams in the quarterfinals. Of course, they’ll ignore being gifted at-large bids they probably shouldn’t have had.

If there’s anything we’ve learned, it’s that the SEC in particular is overvalued year-after-year. Still, the conference continues to get passes despite poor postseason performances outside of the very top.

There needs to be rules. We shouldn’t allow more than two- three tops- at-large bids from the same conference to be included. The whole point of this is to give the best representation as possible and putting in two 9-3 teams from the SEC would completely miss the mark.

But don’t think it won’t happen.
