Trevor Lawrence made football history last week
When Trevor Lawrence heard his name called last Thursday night as the top pick in the 2021 NFL draft, he made history that night.
Since Trevor Lawrence was 14 he has been seen as the next great can’t miss NFL quarterback. Despite all that pressure he did nothing but win, both in high school and in college. Over the last 6.5 years a starting quarterback, Trevor lost just a handful of games that he started.
There aren’t many athletes that can make that claim in any sport.
However, what Trevor Lawrence accomplished last Thursday has never been accomplished by any quarterback. Since the 247Sports Composite began back in 2000, no quarterback ranked number one in their class had gone on to become the top pick in the draft until the Jaguars selected Trevor last week.
Other quarterbacks to be the top-ranked player in the class – Vince Young and Matt Barkley. One had a great college career and was a Top 3 NFL draft choice and the other never lived up to expectations in la-la land and was taken in the fourth round.
If you are unfamiliar with how the 247Sports Composite works, it takes recruiting rankings from every major recruiting service and averages them together for one score. Like ESPN, Rivals, CBS, etc – 247Sports also has its own individual rankings.
Trevor Lawrence accomplished a rare feat just a week ago
To take this a step further, only two other quarterbacks had even been rated as the best quarterback in their high school class and gone on to be the top draft pick in the NFL draft – Matthew Stafford was the best quarterback in the class of 2006 and Jameis Winston was the top quarterback in the 2012 high school recruiting class.
Both of them were eventually the top draft picks in their respective NFL rookie classes.
The only other player in the history of the 247Sports Composite that was the top overall player in the class and would go on to become the number overall pick in the NFL draft – Jadaveon Clowney. He was rated as the best player in the 2011 recruiting class.
There is no doubt that the Jaguars were able to secure their quarterback of the future who will come in and change the culture. Trevor Lawrence is already a legend in Cartersville, GA, and Clemson, SC – he will end his career as a legend in Jacksonville, FL as well.
