Trevor Lawrence: Ranking where he stands all-time in Clemson history
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence has officially moved on to his professional career following the 2021 NFL Draft Thursday night.
Lawrence was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft and he has now already made millions of dollars from endorsement deals alone. He has already broken Joe Burrow’s record for merchandise sales and he could make millions from social media, as well.
We all know that Lawrence has a bright future ahead, but what about his past?
Where Trevor Lawrence ranks all-time in terms of Clemson football greats
Here’s a look at Trevor Lawrence’s final resume as a Clemson Tigers:
- The highest draft pick in Clemson football history (No. 1 overall)
- 3 CFB Playoff appearances
- 1 National Championship (2 appearances)
- Was named Offensive MVP as a freshman in the National Championship victory
- 3 ACC Championships (3 appearances)
- Was named Offensive MVP in his final ACC Title game in 2020
- 34-2 record as a starter (Never lost a regular season game)
- Finished second in Heisman voting in 2020
Lawrence finished his Clemson career completing 66.6 percent of his passes for 10,098 yards and 90 touchdowns to 17 interceptions. His career passing yardage is good enough for third all-time just behind Tajh Boyd (11,904) and Deshaun Watson (10,163).
So, the question is this: Where does Trevor Lawrence stand in terms of Clemson greats?
Whether you agree or not, quarterbacks are judged by their ability to win games. Lawrence basically did nothing but that during his time at Clemson. The only two losses under his watch were against a historically-great LSU team in the 2020 National Championship game and then against a highly-motivated Ohio State team in the CFB Playoff semifinals.
In our rankings of the greatest Tigers of all-time, here’s a look at the players we deemed as the top-5:
- Deshaun Watson
- Banks McFadden
- C.J. Spiller
- William Perry
- Sammy Watkins
Does Lawrence break inside the top-5 with that resume listed above? In my opinion, he absolutely has to.
You can’t have a quarterback who wins three conference championships, leads the team to three-straight top-four finishes, plays for two National Championships and wins one National Title (as a freshman nonetheless) and not have him listed inside your top-five.
Perhaps it’s too high and people will look at some of his downfalls to place him lower on the list- and that may be understandable- but I just believe the record speaks for itself.
He accomplished everything that Watson did during his time at Clemson and absolutely has to be ranked as the No. 2 quarterback all-time in the program.
In my opinion, Trevor Lawrence is a top-3 player all-time just behind Deshaun Watson and Banks McFadden, though you could make the argument for him to be ahead of McFadden and to hold that No. 2 spot.
We’ll be taking a deeper look into this over this offseason, but for now I’m tempted to put Lawrence No. 2 overall and wouldn’t have him lower than No. 3 on the list.
