Clemson football has been one of the most successful programs in the CFB Playoff era and nothing seems to be in the way of slowing down the Tigers anytime soon.
The CFB Playoff began during the 2014 season and since that point, the Tigers have made every single playoff- besides the first one- and they’ve played in four total National Championship games, winning two of them.
There is only one other program who can boast anything close to the same feat and that’s the Alabama Crimson Tide, who have made the playoff six times and competed in five National Championship games, winning three of them.
Because of the success that Clemson football and Alabama have had, many want to expand to include more teams
There’s no doubting that the success had by Clemson and Alabama is the reason we are seeing fans from around the country clamor for an expanded playoff.
Even if their team gets completely manhandled by the Tigers or Crimson Tide- or Ohio State, Georgia or Oklahoma- they want to be a part of the conversation.
AAC commissioner Mike Aresco has made it clear that he wants to see the playoff expand to include Group of 5 teams, which have been left out in the current system. The commissioners are set to meet in just a few weeks and there will reportedly at least be a discussion on expansion.
Will it happen this offseason? Probably not likely. But is it coming down the pike? It’s starting to look more and more that way.
Clemson football fans obviously don’t want to make the path any longer for the Tigers to win a National Championship. After all, having to play 15 games and win two games against top-4 opponents isn’t an easy feat by any means.
That being said, there could be some advantages to expansion as it would allow the Tigers to ‘control their own destiny’ without ever having to worry about impressing a committee again.
