Former Clemson football WR Sammy Watkins likely to find a new NFL home
Former Clemson football WR Sammy Watkins just appeared in another Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s not looking promising that the two sides will reunite.
Watkins- who was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft– hasn’t necessarily lived up to what many thought he could accomplish in terms of All-Pro status, but he has been a serviceable wide receiver in the league over the course of the last few years.
Watkins tallied a career-high 1,047 receiving yards his second year in the league with the Bills, but only played in eight games the following season due to a foot injury. The Bills declined his fifth-year option on his rookie deal and Watson signed a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams for the 2017 season before ultimately landing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018.
In the last three years, Watkins has been a part of two teams who appeared in the Super Bowl and then one Super Bowl victory (2019). His best season came during the Super Bowl winning year where he caught 52 passes for 673 yards and three touchdowns.
There were rumors that the Chiefs might move on from Watkins last season, but they ultimately decided to keep him around. He ended up missing some games with injury and finished the year with 421 receiving yards and two touchdowns, both career-lows.
As the former Clemson football WR’s contract runs out, it’s not looking promising he’ll be back in Kansas City
Watkins posted a cryptic Tweet Thursday evening in which he said ‘whatever team I land on will be extremely happy.’
The assumption? Watkins and the Chiefs are likely parting ways.
Watkins is clearly still motivated and wants to prove himself at the NFL level. There’s no doubt he’ll get a chance somewhere, but with the market for free-agent wide receivers being what it is this 2021 offseason, he’s almost certainly going to have to take less money than what he would in a normal cycle.
During his time at Clemson, Sammy Watkins accounted for 3,730 yards of total offense and scored 29 touchdowns.
