Clemson Pro Day: Jackson Carman cost himself millions

Jackson Carman lost more money by not working out at the Clemson Pro Day.

There was a lot of hype and hope for Clemson football left tackle Jackson Carman coming into the 2020 season. He was a fringe first-round talent that could make millions more with a solid season for the Tigers and great pre-draft showing like the Clemson Pro Day.

Given the success he had after his sophomore season, this should have been easy money for him. Instead, he more than likely has lost millions, and his decision to not participate in the Clemson Pro Day Thursday was a really poor decision by those he has hired to look out for his best interest.

Carman is represented by Andy Simms of Young Money APAA. Earlier this year, Simms had this to say about Carman

"“The talent is obvious. He’s played at one of the highest levels in the country, at left tackle. He’s an early round pick, no question about it.”"

Try telling that to former four-year starter Mitch Hyatt.

Hyatt, who was the starter when Carman was a freshman, has yet to play in his first NFL game and went undrafted despite being one of the best offensive linemen in Clemson football history.

With no NFL Combine in 2021, the Clemson Pro Day was going to be the only chance for Carman to work out for a large group of teams and impress them all. Now, he will have to hope that teams will be impressed with the private workouts they will put him through and with nothing but mediocre game film to compare to, if he isn’t on the money during those workouts, he will lose a lot of it.

There is no doubt that Jackson Carman has the ability and size to play at the next, but his decision to not work out today will undoubtedly have some teams take him completely off their draft board.

NFL general managers and coaches want to see a guy work out, not rely on their former college coach or agent to sell them on who you are. With Simms having been an agent for more than 20 years, he of all people should know this and should have done a better job of advising his client.

Short of Jackson being hurt, there is no good reason for him not to have worked out today.
