Secondary

There is no denying this group was really bad in 2020. Dabo Swinney loved to talk about it being the most talented group of defensive backs that he has ever had, but they failed to show up quite often in 2020.

To say that this group was flat-out exposed and embarrassed their last time on the field would be a severe understatement. Coaches Mike Reed and Mickey Conn have a lot of work to do in order to solidify this group on the back-end of the defense.

There is some worry about the depth of this group, but when you look at the roster, there shouldn’t be. The corner position alone will have seven players that were rated four stars or higher coming out of high school. That means every player that will be in the rotation for Clemson at corner will have been among the highest-rated prospects at their position before choosing the Tigers.

There is clearly a lot of talent back there but Mike Reed has to do a better job of developing and getting them ready to compete on a national level, not just against mediocre ACC talent.

If Clemson football team 126 has a hope to win its fourth national title, the secondary cannot allow another quarterback to throw for as many touchdowns as he had incompletions like Justin Fields did in New Orleans.
