The one fault we find in Deshaun Watson amidst trade rumors

Anyone who has followed us on Rubbing the Rock know that we’ve been advocating for Deshaun Watson and pulling for him in every way possible since he arrived in the NFL.

We’ve consistently criticized the Texans’ handling of Deshaun Watson and called that franchise out multiple times well before the trade rumors ever started. And that won’t stop.

However, as the trade saga surrounding Watson continues to heat up, there is one thing we’ve found that we find fault in the former Clemson quarterback about.

It has nothing to do with his on-the-field game. It has nothing to do with how he has carried himself off-the-field. The analysts who say Watson needs ‘his diapers changed’ should absolutely be called out because we absolutely believe that- as the franchise quarterback- he should have a say in the future of the organization.

So, what exactly is it? It’s the fact that Deshaun Watson signed a long-term deal with the Houston Texans and we could already see the writing on the wall

It’s not as if Watson signed a long-term deal with the Texans before all of these poor decisions came to a head.

Watson signed the *lucrative* deal just before the 2020 season started. As Clemson football fans, we were hoping that he would hold off on inking an extension with the Texans and, instead, look at all of his options. We thought he might hold out for that rookie contract to expire or that he would demand a trade- without signing an extension- to force their hand and get him out of Houston.

But, for whatever reason, he decided to sign the contract.

This was after DeAndre Hopkins had been traded for basically a second-round pick. This was after a couple of years in the system and seeing that the offensive line wasn’t getting any better. It’s not as if they signed him to a deal and then traded away his top receiver or got rid of a formidable offensive line.

We all know that Watson is a competitor and he might’ve believed that he could single-handedly will the franchise to victory. We all know that Watson is kind-hearted and loves his community. He has done so much for the Houston area since he was drafted back in 2017.

When you combine his competitive nature, the fact that he loved the community and the amount of money they were willing to pay him, you can see why it would’ve been tempting to sign that deal.

But anybody who had been keeping up with the Texans know that was a crumbling franchise. They’ve made poor decision after poor decision. They have had a couple of years to address their offensive line now and simply haven’t. They had a little cap space and still didn’t get Watson any help. The supporting cast around him is laughable and the truth is that it won’t be getting better anytime soon.

Even without Bill O’Brien running things, that is still a joke of an organization and everyone knew it well before this trade request was made.

No one can blame Deshaun Watson for wanting to get out of Houston. He feels betrayed in how they handled their GM and head coach openings. He probably still isn’t too happy about certain roster decisions they’ve made- especially trading away Nuk- and he wants to win. He knows that isn’t happening in Houston any time soon.

We are pulling for him to get out of Houston and find a better situation.

He is set moneywise now for a long time, no doubt, but we just wonder how things might’ve been different if he hadn’t signed that contract. Knowing they wouldn’t have him locked in long-term, the Texans would’ve almost been forced to trade sooner rather than later, and there’s no doubt Watson could’ve earned just as big of a contract elsewhere once that trade occurred.

Next. Urban Meyer got a front-row seat to see Trevor Lawrence. dark

Still, this is the hand that is dealt and it will be interesting to see how it all turns out. The Texans are steadfast that Deshaun Watson will be their quarterback next season. Deshaun Watson is steadfast that he doesn’t want to be anywhere around Houston next season.
