Clemson basketball: Tigers have become an embarrassment under Brad Brownell
Enough is enough and it is time that Clemson basketball move on from Brad Brownell.
How much more disappointment and underachieving does Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich have to see before he realizes that Brad Brownell isn’t the guy?
After more than a decade in charge of Clemson basketball, nothing has changed under Brownell, matter of fact, the product on the floor has gotten worse and the excuses from Clemson media have become nauseating.
Last year, everyone on the Clemson flagship station told fans to relax because year 11 under Brownell was going to be different, They all adopted the South Carolina mantra of “wait until next year” – feel free to search all of them on Twitter, it is all there.
The flagship personalities even went as far as to make people feel stupid for questioning Brownell and the direction of the program.
Saturday’s matchup against the worst team Duke has fielded in decades, still ended in an embarrassing Clemson blowout loss. No one seemed like they wanted to be there and made ESPN look like geniuses for moving the game to ESPN 2 when it was originally scheduled for ESPN.
How much more do we need to see?
Yes, Brad Brownell is a great guy but he is a below-average coach and recruiter. When you have a team that has as many returning minutes and games played as this Clemson basketball team does, getting your brains beat in the way that has over the last two weeks is unacceptable.
Remember, the returners in 2021 were the reason that they were going to be good and we needed to be patient.
Sorry, but at this point, Brownell missing time because of covid is no longer an excuse for the product we see on the floor. While the players may argue that the message isn’t stale and they do love playing for Brownell, their effort on the floor says otherwise.
All of that said, Brownell isn’t going anywhere unless Clemson boosters step up and offer the buyout money. The athletic department is cash strapped, which is why teams like Men’s track and cross country are going away.
At some point, someone has to acknowledge that Brownell isn’t the answer until that happens, it will be nothing but heartache and disappointment from Clemson basketball.
