Clemson football kicking off against UGA to start the college football season is official.
The SEC announced their 2021 football schedule Wednesday and UGA will in fact kick off the season in Charlotte against Clemson football. That gives UGA exactly 219 days from the time this was published to get their excuses ready.
We all know it’s coming.
We all know plenty of SEC fans who make excuses every time their conference loses a big game – they are also the same fans that jump on the Alabama bandwagon come January. While we have plenty of time to break this game down and tell you why Clemson football will win this game, UGA fans are going to spend the time convincing themselves that they are legit and Kirby is a national championship coach.
Spending most of the last 25 years of my life in Georgia, I have heard every year that this is UGA’s year and that they will finally end their national title drought – 2021 will be no different.
Since 2000, this will be just the eighth time that UGA will have started the season off against a Power 5 non-SEC opponent, this will be the fifth time against Clemson.
Clemson football will make a statement to start 2021.
Well, 2021 won’t be their year either and this game in Charlotte won’t be a close game either. It will be reminiscent of the 2018 national title game against Alabama that saw the Tigers run away, 44-16.
The trash-talking from the SEC puppies has already started, which may be the best part of college football and there is no reason to take it seriously. This is part of the pageantry that makes college football the sport on the planet.
Unless a young Todd Gurley, Sony Michel, and Nick Chubb are walking through that door in September, UGA will be in for a world of hurt and they will have to quickly regroup with a bunch of excuses as to why they lost to a lowly ACC team.
We all know the excuses – they were looking ahead to UAB in Athens the next week or my favorite SEC excuse – “we didn’t want to be there”.
Clemson football will use this matchup in Charlotte to springboard to their third national title since 2016, while UGA will use the embarrassment to excuse yet another season of underachieving under head coach Kirby Smart.
UGA should enjoy their higher recruiting class ranking as it’s the only time in 2021 that they will beat Clemson football on or off the field.
September cannot get here soon enough.
