Some Tennessee fans think they’d be too good for the Clemson football offensive coordinator
There have been many rumors surrounding the Clemson football program and the potential that Offensive Coordinator Tony Elliott could be heading to Tennessee with the head coach opening up in Knoxville.
Most Clemson football fans have begun to recognize that Elliott has played an intricate part in the Tigers’ success over the years.
While there are still complaints to be had about conservative play-calls, not taking advantage of running opportunities and not setting up plays for an open middle-of-the-field, the truth of the matter is that Elliott is a good coach.
There is always still room to grow, but there’s no doubt that he knows the game and there’s no doubt that the Tiger offense was affected greatly by him being out for the Sugar Bowl in this past CFB Playoff semifinal against Ohio State.
Even so, there are some Tennessee fans who believe they’re above Elliott as their hire.
An unverified Twitter account with less than 500 followers reported that Elliott was offered the Tennessee job and is expected to accept. Of course, that tweet absolutely exploded.

Truth is, Clemson football circles are fairly certain that Tweet has no validity
Tigernet’s David Hood later reported that there was no validity to the Tweet, according to his sources. As a matter of fact, Hood said that the sources he had spoken with said Elliott hadn’t even had contact with Tennessee.
So, it’s a big reach to say that Tennessee has offered the job and Elliott is expected to accept when he hasn’t even been contacted. And we trust Hood way more than some unverified Twitter account.
But, let’s not focus on the fake Twitter report. Let’s focus on the amount of Tennessee fans who act as if they’re too good for Tony Elliott.
Tennessee fans are out here talking about how ‘they need a proven head coach’ and how Elliott would be ‘an underwhelming hire.’
Exactly who do you think you are?
Tennessee has been wallowing in mediocrity for more than a decade. The Vols haven’t had a 10-win season since 2007. Just for reference, 2021 freshmen who have now enrolled in schools or will enroll later this summer weren’t even in kindergarten yet the last time Tennessee won 10 games.
Vols fans have to stop pretending that they’re some illustrious powerhouse and accept that there is a long way up for them to reach elite status again.
To those in social media circles talking about the ‘crack’ in the Clemson football dynasty, you might want to check in and see what Dabo Swinney has built.
If Elliott does choose to move on from Clemson, we’ll wish him the best. But, there are two things we should take away here: First, an unverified Twitter account is no source for news and, second, Tennessee fans thinking they’re above Elliott is absolutely laughable and yet another sign that shows how far from reality many within that fan base are truly living.
